Sunkissed, Birthday & Snow Days...

The weekend is about over...darn.  I had plenty of time to get a few things done today that I really wanted to, though, so it's all good.

I got the Sunkissed fabric cut for the sample quilt for my lqs (Saving Thyme).

I prepped fabric and traced a pattern for a huge project.  Did I tell you about this?  Sharon of MoosecraftUSA & I are embarking on a project.  Together but separately...each will have our own finished product.  But, across the miles, we will be here for each other as we work our way through this project...and try to not become overwhelmed by the immense amount of hours it will take to complete it.  (Me Mum predicts that it will take 194,000 hours to complete it. Sharon did the math and it comes out to be 12 years...24/7.  ha!)

It all started when Sharon mentioned 2 BOM's that she was starting this year.  Applique/quilting projects.  I looked at the patterns she was doing (they're so cool!) and looked further and saw one that I was completely taken with.  If you're a regular reader of my blog, this will sound familiar to you.  That's cuz I wrote about it here.  Sharon and I emailed back and forth about this quilt and we were both so excited...she finally could no longer resist and joined the BOM for that, too!  YAY!  So, my plan was to cheer her on with it.  But, surprise, surprise, she decided to send a pattern of my own to me.  Happy Birthday to me from Sharon!  Thank you so much!  (ohyeah, more about my birthday in a bit.)  So.  We are in this together.  I think she just really wanted someone to feel the pain with her.  This pattern calls for 16 skeins of floss...of the same color...2 strands used for the stitchery.  Look at how gorgeous this variegated floss is...

The pattern calls for over 40 different fabrics, but I opted to cut that number down to 26.  I went to the lqs close by my work (Stitcher's Crossing) and Julie gave me outstanding customer service with help in selecting fabrics.  In fact, she ran around with a skein of the floss and chose fabrics...all I had to do was stand there and decide which ones I could not live without.  There are several batiks...soooo gorgeous!  Lots of textures.  And, of course, all more gorgeous than they show here.

I tend to watch a lot of tv in the evenings...especially now with American Idol on and Dancing With the Stars due to start soon (March 21).  If I have some handwork to do...it's all a good thing.  Keeps me from thinking about smoking and eating.  This project will definitely keep my hands busy!

So.  My first block of stitchery is ready to go.  YAY!  The stitching is all done in backstitch, so it won't be at all difficult.  The challenge is the detail in the stitchery blocks.

That being said, it is going to be one gorgeous quilt when finished.  Since Sharon's BOM is 14 months long...and I'm not going to rush to get done before her...we should have these ready to cuddle up with for the winter of 2012-2013.  Course, it's always possible that after all of our work, we will opt to hang them on our walls!!

(you'll have to click to enlarge to see this and even then you may not be able to see it very well.  I would like to point out that this block has the least amount of detail of all of them!)

 Wish us luck!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yup, I had a birthday this past week.  I think I forgot to mention it.  No big number/milestone...this year.  It was a quiet birthday...nothing special going on.  All of my coworkers brought food...can you say sugar overload?  I received many phone calls & emails,  2 virtual floral bouquets, several happy birthday wishes on Facebook and some very nice gifts.  Thank you all very much!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been thinking about doing a giveaway.  The only reason that I'm not announcing it right here & now is that I haven't made up my mind what to give away.  Any suggestions?

Have a great work week!

To Do...or Not

As usual, I have a long list of things
I'd like to get done this weekend.
I know I won't get them all done.
But, it's best to have a lot on the list.
Makes it easier to pick & choose, that way.
Wouldn't you agree?
{grin}

here's the list:
*sweep/vacuum DONE
*laundry DONE
*dishes DONE
*cans/boxes into recycle bin DONE
*hook eyes on 2sheep rug DONE
*finish reading 'Tick Tock' DONE
*work on dqs10 quilt
*list dye books for sale DONE
(check them out at The Chocolate Puppy!)
*make pattern for scrub top
*pack box for me Mum
*watch 'the American' movie DONE
(would not recommend it)
*think about doll clothes

We shall see what I get accomplished!

I say, What?...

I have come to the conclusion that one of the major advantages of retirement is also the biggest disadvantage.

Yup, the fact that there is always tomorrow.

The advantage of not doing something today is that I can always do it tomorrow.

The disadvantage of not doing something today is that I can always do it tomorrow.

But, what if tomorrow never comes?  Not really 'what if tomorrow never comes',  but rather, 'what if I never think this is the tomorrow that I will/can do it'?  Whatever 'it' is.

I am the Queen of Procrastination.

Here's the deal...

I have a long list of things to do.  Yet, with no urgency involved in getting things done...with having all day every day, rather than only the hours after work and the weekends, I tend to put things off and sometimes just plain don't get at them.

Back in August, after a month of being retired, I instituted a daily schedule...a routine, of sorts.  That's all fine and good.  When I follow it, things get done.

But, what if something upsets the apple cart.  Or, what if I don't feel like doing things in that order that day...I would rather not do 'that', but would rather do 'this'.

I guess I need to feel some sort of urgency.

Take, for example, making Christmas gifts.

Two weeks ago, I decided what I wanted to make for each person on my list.  I gathered some of the fabric needed and made a note of what fabrics I might need to buy.  A good start, I thought.  Well, that's all I did.  I have too much other stuff to do.

Yes, but did I do that other stuff?  Um....no.  Well, perhaps some of it, but I certainly did not put my nose to the grindstone.  Not.  At.  All.

So, I now have set deadlines for myself.  Let us see how that works, shall we?  Now, mind you, I still need to be making doll clothes,  doll quilts, carry cots, and other items for my business.

How to deal with that?  Separating what needs to get done.  I think a good plan is to work on my business sewing during the week and devote my weekends to gift-making.  I think my focus and concentration will improve with that in mind.

So.  The first project for this weekend involves these squares.

I am going to make a set of coasters for my Aunt Bev.  Perhaps 4.  Perhaps more.  We shall see how much fun I'm having.  The coasters match a table runner that I made for her a few years ago.  See it here.
I will not go to bed tonight until they are done.  I have several hours, so I should be able to get them done. If I apply myself. Which, may I say, I really must do.

~sigh~

The life of a retiree.

On another note...I finished a doll outfit.  This one is not for Aubrey (and Aubrey was her name), but will be placed for sale in my Etsy shop sometime this next week.

Did you notice the itty-bitty cross stitches on the sleeve edges?  Just an extra little touch...

Okay, I must go and get started.  I have deadlines to meet, after all.  ~grin~

I hope you're getting done what you want/need to!

Have a great weekend!

Getting Settled...

I am here...and still unpacking.  It's taking me longer than it should, but I want things where I can find them, so I am trying to place them all where they belong.  You know?

The kitchen is almost done...all the boxes are unpacked and the cupboards are filled.  Need to hang a few things on the walls and then I will call it done.

The living room is sort of done.  Need to decide what to put on the corner curio cabinet and in the barrister bookcase.  Which, of course, means that there are several boxes sitting in this room.

The bedroom is mostly done...still need to hang things on the wall.

The bathroom is done.  Except to hang a few things.

My sewing room is a mess!  I am slowly getting it put together, but wow, do I have a lot of stuff!  I really need to keep working at it and get it done, though, cuz I really want to do some sewing!

Other than that, I am enjoying Canon City.  Small town atmosphere...everyone friendly...everything easy to find... beautiful mountains all around...what is not to like?

I signed up for a hand-quilting class at the First Stitches shop.  It is in 2 weeks...I will let you know how it went.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I received a box in the mail today...from Cathy.  You all remember who Cathy is, right?  The one who sends me boxes of fabric for doll clothes and other stuff.  Today's box contained knits, the cutest piece of corduroy ever, wonderful cottons, wooden buttons, elastic, a few hand-knit shawls (not shown), crocheted flowers, 2 pair doll shoes (not shown), 3 skeins of yarn, tiny ribbon flowers and 2 white t-shirts(not shown). Makes me smile, for sure!  Thank you, Cathy!!
That's all I have for today.  Perhaps one day soon I will sit and write a nice long post.  Perhaps.
A Very White...and Handmade Christmas...
It's been over a week...I am falling down on the job, here!
My only excuse is that I have been trying to get all my Christmas gifts done and out the door to their recipients.  Almost made it...a few will be getting their gifts late.  I did my best...what's a girl to do?
Two of my grandkids have birthdays close to this time of year...Jasmine in early December and Conlan in early January.  I made separate gifts for the birthdays, too...YAY!!
Did you hear about the snow we got on Thursday?  Over 14 inches...I had two days off work...snow days.  Shoveling out my car so the plow could get the parking lot done was a challenge in and of itself.  But, with help from neighbors, it got done and all is good.  Except, I twisted my knee and have been hobbling around.  Good thing sewing doesn't take much but sitting.
The excitement is building!  Once I get another gift done and finish packaging everything to go into the mail, I will be ready to work on a few major projects!  And, I'll have a 4 day weekend next weekend, so am hoping to get a good start on at least one of them.  I will be resuming work on 'snow days'...need to make the fabric blocks, finish the stitching that extends onto those blocks and get it all put together.  Still some months to go before it's done...hoping to finish getting it all put together by spring.  The other project is the one from my dear long-distance friend, Lindy, of The Gingerbread House...a gift for my birthday last February!  The fabric collection is Curio.  I will be making this quilt...
So.  A handmade Christmas.  I had fun but would have had more fun making everything had I started earlier.  Course, I blame that on my move.  All's well that ends well, though.  Hey?  So...here are photos of most of the gifts.  I neglected to take photos of everything...how did that happen?
I made several more of these...cannot find the photos.
I made about a thousand of these washcloths (yes, I know...many call these dishcloths, but I use them - and give them - as face or wash cloths )in various colors and patterns.  Okay.  Perhaps I only made about 2 dozen of them.  Some were with a design...birthday cake, Christmas tree ornament, football helmet and sun.  Those were fun to do and so easy...these are the best thing to work on before I leave for work and while watching tv.  Free patterns found here...
And, then.  Yesterday, sister Jill complained that 2 of the kleenex cozies she got earlier this year were plain.  Huh?  So, I made 2 more for her.  I think she will not call these plain.  What do you think?  ~grin~
And, then...just for the heck of it, I put together this little pouch for her.  Different than the ones I made for others...just something for cell phone, mp3 player...whatever she wants.  She has no idea I did this...and since she never reads my blog (shame on you, sister!) I feel safe in showing it to you, my bloggy friends.
So, a very handmade Christmas...pillowcases, zippered pouches, face/washcloths, linen napkins (no photo) and a small quilt (no photo).
Oh...and I made a little dopp bag...well, it is actually called a boxy pouch.  Oh dear...I have no idea where I found the tutorial.
I am sure that I neglected to mention/show something.  But, you get the general idea, right?
Have I mentioned how much I love my Naomi Janome?  She is very dependable and does whatever I ask.
And, what, pray tell, was the brown boy doing while I was doing all of this sewing and knitting?
This...
And this...
And more of that 'just laying around' thing.  What can one expect?  ~grin~
I will be having a very quiet Christmas, but I am okay with that.  What are your plans?
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!
All Done!!!
YAY!!
I am all done with sewing Christmas gifts.
I feel very good about everything I made.
And, I made all gifts except
the 2 gift cards I bought for my grandsons.
I never did get around to making
any hot pads/potholders, though.
I guess I can work on them at my leisure
and give them as gifts throughout the year...
or save them for next Christmas!
Here are the last of the napkins...
Here is a photo of some of what I made.
When I took this photo, I had already mailed
out some gifts, and was not finished making others.
Here are the stats:
97 napkins
6 aprons
22 kleenex cozies
1 zippered pouch
1 sweatshirt jacket
All fabric used came from my stash
except for 1.5 yards for napkins
and 1/2 yard for sweatshirt jacket facings.
I used 24 yards of fabric for napkins,
4 yards for aprons and
mostly scraps for kleenex cozies.
I generated a few more scraps
for myself in the process.
That is a lot of fabric!
And, truth be told...not all of the napkins
are going out as Christmas gifts.
I may have overdone it a bit.
Or not.
I was just so happy sewing
and listening to music
that I made napkins out of any fabric
that I either had no immediate use for,
or just plain thought
would make great napkins!
Truth be told,
there are some sets that
I am going to keep for myself!
How's that!?!
And, what this means...
is that I have the next week
to do whatever I want!
Like, finish one quilt top
and start another!
I need to find a way to baste some quilts...
don't want to move all those flimsies with me.
Thank you, God,
for giving me the ability
(and fabric!) to do this.
Amen.
Lazy Days...
Since late Sunday afternoon,
I have done nothing of substance.
Not sure why,
but I have absolutely no ambition!
I think about what I want to do,
yet I don't do it.
The most ambitious I've been this week...
I delivered the 2 baby Halloween bags
to the vet school.
Other than that?
Nothing.
At.
All.
Before I go to bed at night,
I think about what I want to do on the morrow.
Yet, that just doesn't happen.
OH!  I have been knitting a bit.
Another facecloth.
In Clementine.
AND, I have been reading.
About doll-making.
But, that's all.
I surely hope that this,
too, shall pass.
ps  it's not that i haven't done anything at all.
The dishes are done, the bed is made,
the vacuuming is done, the dog is walked...
I've done some editing...
just haven't done anything creative.
That's all I meant.
Oh. My. Gosh...
All I can say is that I am truly blessed!!!
WOW, yesterday was a really fun day! I received 2 boxes in the mail. Course, those are the ones the postman brought to me...I did not venture out to the end of the driveway where the mailbox is...too cold. For all I know, I have a gazillion more small packages and Christmas cards waiting for me there! ha! Only kidding...my luck, after bundling up and trudging through the snow to get there, all I'll have is the sales circular.
Anyway.
First of all...a box of gifts from Janer, my BFF in Eau Claire. She has been my BFF for 38+ years...long time! She knows me like no one else does...and all the history between us...WOW!
Here's a photo of what was in the box Janer sent...it's always so much fun to open gifts from her! There is a large pot/vase, which is 8" tall and 6" in diameter with cupids all around (I love cupids/angels!). Please note the exotic bouquet of sockonella heeltroides. This rare plant comes in pairs...and is available worldwide. Well, okay...what you see is 11 pairs of socks! Janer and I were chatting one day and I was saying that I never have enough socks, and she was telling me that she has more socks than one person could ever wear. So, as she was packing my box of gifts, she realized that she needed some packing material...and thought, "OH! Jacque needs socks...I'll pad everything with socks!" What a great idea, Janer! She's nothing if not hilarious!
Also in the box...the primitive wooden angel, a hand-held battery powered can opener (I finally figured out which way the batteries go in and it is a slick little thing to have!!!), a bottle to put all my worries in and hand them over to God (wow...what a concept, hey!?), and the real deal, the gift gift...a bracelet engraved with 'the fruit of the spirit' (you know...Galatians 5:22..."But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.") It is simply wonderful!
Oh My Gosh! Unbelievable...what a wonderful box of gifts!
The second box was a huge surprise! This one was from Bren. Not that I was surprised that she sent me gifts...but wait til you see! First, I received a hand-held sewing machine...you know, those little ones they advertise on tv (since the 1950's, methinks) as being able to sew anything??? Here's the photo...
Yup, I am totally set now for any and all sewing needs!
The other gift from Brenis...handmade...a LAP QUILT! I was soooo surprised and pleased and deliriously happy! It is absolutely gorgeous...my colors...and will match my big a** star rug wonderfully!!! It measures about 50 x 50, I think...and is perfect for snuggling in my big easy chair!
Thank you so much to Janer and Bren!!!
Lest you believe it's all about receiving and not about giving with me, I am now finally able to show one gift I gave. This is an apron I made for me Mum's birthday (11/2) and sent home with a big box of Christmas gifts. I just kinda made up the pattern as I went along. She said that she loves it and will have someone take a photo of her wearing it...I'll post that on my blog when I get it.
I finished sewing another gift yesterday...and got started on yet another one...just a few more and then I'll be all done! WHEW!
Enjoy your Sunday!
Other Things...
A few things that I thought
I should catch you all up on.
I have actually gotten a few things done...besides
moving all my stuff so Julie has room for her stuff.
We're a long way from being done, though.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Be sure to click on all the photos to enlarge them.*

I finished block two of the Snow Days quilt.
Kinda wrinkled, I know.  Sorry.
oops!...I missed a spot on the right side of the roof.
Best get that done tonight!!!
Done...but no new photo!

and two teal fat-eighths.
I know you saw some of these,
but I never showed everything together.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inspired!
It's always a good day when inspiration hits.
Don't you think?
You may or may not remember way back in March
when I had all the fabric cut for my son's quilt.
A wedding gift for Paul & Rachel.
They got married in December.
Au.then.tic + a red and a purple and more blacks.
Here are the blocks all cut...
 then all sewn together...
I started putting the blocks together...
and didn't like how it was looking.
At all.
So, I put it all away.
Waited for inspiration.
And, waited.
woohoo...finally got some!
Inspiration, that is.
I reverse-sewed all the blocks.
Didn't take long.
A few nights in front of the tv.
I don't plan to mix the other
fabrics with the Au.then.tic. fabrics.
Maybe will use them on the back.
Time will tell.
I now have 2 blocks done.
Started sewing the rectangles together
and then cutting them in half,
then making rows.
The 'squares' are not quite square,
but I wasn't going to trim them all.
And, in the end, it doesn't really matter.
Does it?
 I have 2 blocks done...
36 'not quite squares' in a block...
each block measures about 16.5 x 18 inches.
There will be 25 blocks...
making the finished quilt about 80 x 87 inches.
(my largest quilt, yet!)
I think Paul and Rachel will be happy.
  I know I will be.
As long as this comes out the way
I see it in my head, that is.
Still UNpacking...
YAY, I am almost all done UNpacking! My Music is all unpacked and sorted, my bedroom is almost done, the dining room is done and the kitchen just needs a few things put in place (if I can find that PERFECT place, that is). Cleaned at my apartment yesterday and broke a belt on my vacuum cleaner...so, I need to go back today and finish up. Going to be one of the warmest days, of course...temp in the 90's and high humidity. ohluckyme!
No new photos of the house today. Am sure I will have some to share after this weekend. I'm having an OPEN HOUSE tomorrow so my friends and family can see the house.
HEY, but here's a photo someone shared on the Led Zeppelin email list...it's Robert Plant with Strider, his blue merle collie boy that he had way back when. I once saw a video of Robert and his family walking through a field with Strider all grown up...would have been late 60's or very early 70's...Strider was a beautiful dog. (NOOOO, that's not why I have collies...didn't know ole Percy had ever had one until a few years ago.) "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" is a song all about Strider. You'd know it if you heard it. There's a verse that I always thought was 'there's no companion like a blue-eyed girl'...it's actually 'there's no companion like a blue-eyed merle'...guess I never paid attention to the part that Robert sings 'you're the finest dog I ever knew'. HA!
Have a great day!
What You All Have Been Waiting For...
Yup, I am finally sitting down and writing about Julie's visit. Sorry, it's just been a busy week.
So...let's see. Julie's plane landed about 6:40 p.m. on Thursday (that's last week, August 28). I called my sister, Jill, and said, "the eagle has landed". Then, when Julie & I were in the car together, I called Jill and said, "I have the package". She was hoping that one of those alphabet agencies was not listening in on our call. hahahahaha!!!
We went to Pedro's where Julie's friend, Danielle, met us for supper. Actually, appetizers. A great time was had by all. Here's Julie (on the left) with Danielle.
Got home very late...the dogs were sooo excited to see their Aunt Julie! Remember, she lived right next door (our apartments were back to back) to the pups and I for 6 years. Allegra barked and barked...giving her all kinds of heck for leaving us, I'm sure. Tag had his wart hog (that she gave him) in his mouth and kept walking back & forth in front of her. You could see him thinking..."ohhoho...my Auntie Julie...ohho". Tango is so laid back...he was happy to see her, I'm sure. Sorry, no photos of their reunion.
Friday was our day for going to Wausau. My Mom & Ray & Aunt Bev met us at Jill's house. We spent the day with them...had a wonderful lunch and a nice visit with everyone. Here is my Mom with my Aunt Bev...standing out on Jill's deck chatting.
They do some silly things, those two. Like this photo..."let's pose like we did when we were kids...you know, all stiff & straight." So, they did!
Here's my sister, Jill.
This is Tim, Jill's boyfriend. He looks really tough, doesn't he? Course, he's not...he's a nice guy. And, FUNNY!!! AND, he can keep up with me and my smart mouth! Not many who can do that! Usually, my sisters pay the price. Anyway. Tim. I call him, "Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?" I have his phone number in my cell programmed with that instead of his name...hahaha. Do you know where that comes from? Take a look here if you don't. Here's the video on YouTube if you want to listen to it. See the barbed wire on his arm? (well, am sure you couldn't miss it...ha) It's very cool...goes all the way down his arm, intertwined around and around. About the coolest tat I've ever seen!
We watched 2 movies that weekend, "The Bucket List" & "Lions for Lambs". Both good...both worth watching.
Shopping was on the schedule for Saturday. But first, Tag needed a bath. He has allergies, so bathing him with hypoallergenic shampoo every 6-8 weeks is what I do. Helps his skin stay calm.
So...shopping. We went to Gordman's...never been there before. Do you have a Gordman's by you? Everything on clearance...really a fun place to shop...it's my new favorite store! Here's what I bought... Can you see it? It's 'Fruit of the Spirit'...'Live by the Spirit...Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control.' It's perfect for me (remember, I have the 'fruit of the spirit' rug to hook?)!!
On to Wal-Mart where Julie bought several things. Here's the manager guy who helped her make the best choice in a 32" flat-panel tv.
Julie is trying to choose a gift card for one of the people who will help her move her furniture out of a storage locker into a U-Haul truck. She chose a Subway card...good choice!
We met another of her friends, Rhonda, at the Red Lobster. Rhonda and Julie have Golden Retrievers in common...she's a very good friend to Julie.
Sunday was the big moving day. Julie stored her belongings in a storage unit when she moved to Durango last year. She is now in her own apartment...so she needed her stuff!!! Rhonda helped...she really packed it in!
I told Chris that I wouldn't give out his phone number...he's afraid that others will call on him to help move things. If ya don't know how to get in touch with him, you cannot ask for his help, right? HA! Actually, he's a board-certified veterinary dentist...works at the vet school. He's a really nice guy. When he helped Julie move out of her apartment, he told her that if she needed help moving her furniture out of the storage unit into a truck, to call him. Now really, what kind of foolishness is that??? He knew how much stuff she had, cuz he helped move it all in there! He probably thought she would forget his offer. LOL...apparently not, hey??? He did a really great job...this moving thing could be his second career!
Almost done! WOW...I cannot believe how much stuff they crammed into that truck. The guy in the red shirt (Tim) is married to the blonde (Jody) who has her back to the camera. She is a pharmacist and worked with Julie at the vet school.So, here's the motley crew...all done. YAY!!!
Later that day, Kim came out for a short visit...and Julie trimmed collie feet.
We spent a quiet afternoon and evening. Julie was up and out the door early on Labor Day! (This photo...Julie's actually driving...the truck is actually moving...just the wrong angle, I guess.)
BYE! Be safe!
I miss her already.
